Side air bag (SAB) testing procedures have been developed to minimize the potential risk of SAB-related injuries for occupants, especially children, who are seated very close to a deploying SAB (called "out-of-position"). Manufacturers voluntarily report to the government whether the SABs in a given vehicle model have undergone and passed these testing procedures.
